More Author Insight: Sucked Into the Story

What type of storyline or hook gets you every time?

"Stories about characters who are trapped. I love...desperation. I like songs about it, and I love books that have some aspect of desperation, you know, form being trapped in some way...literal or metaphorical, it doesn't matter to me." - Bethany Griffin, author of Masque of the Read Death.

"I’m an all-day sucker for classic British fantasy, whether it’s The Hobbit or Harry Potter or the brilliant Bartimaeus trilogy. Or even something like A Game of Thrones that has that same vibe." - Barry Wolverton, author of Neversink.

"I'm definitely a sucker for a well-written fantasy with hints (or more than hints!) of romance. Give me amazing worldbuilding, characters who make me swoon, and prose that sings off the page and I will read the commas out of a book." - Jodi Meadows, author of Incarnate.

"I'm a sucker for period dramas - especially if they include a young woman coming into her own." - Elizabeth Miles, author of Fury.

"Mysteries. I love to be surprised by where a story ends up." - Sarah Wilson Etienne, author of Harbinger.

"Coming of age. I can’t read enough of that transition from child to adult. I think I’m perpetually stuck in that mode, of balancing childishness with maturity. And there are so many wonderful firsts in that phase." - Veronica Rossi, author of Under the Never Sky.

"Spies and impossible missions! I love anything with that James Bond/Ocean’s Eleven/Bourne Identity feel to it." - Marissa Meyer, author of Cinder.

"If I’m already laughing or crying within the first few pages, it’s usually a good sign." - Jess Rothenberg, author of The Catastrophic History of You and Me.

"I love a good mystery." - David Macinnis Gill, author of Invisible Sun.

"Romance.  I love a love story." - Beth Fantaskey, author of Jessica Rules the Dark Side.

"I grew up with someone very much like my character, Zak, from Shattered Souls. Addiction was a powerful and destructive element from my youth." - Mary Lindsey, author of Shattered Souls.

"I love a heroine with a feisty streak—even better if you don’t, at first glance, expect her to have that spark. I grew up loving Jo in Little Women, Lizzy Bennet, Emma. And I’m also a hopeless romantic, so she’s gotta fall in love." - Aimee Agresti, author of Illuminate.

"Friends becoming lovers." - Jennifer Echols, author of The One That I Want.

"I'm a sucker for a good timeslip." - Suzanne Lazear, author of Innocent Darkness.

Check back Tuesday to find out if people or setting are more difficult to write! (There might also, maybe be a giveaway starting. Maybe. I'm just saying.)
