Literary Lures: Pixie from Page Turners Blog

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Pixie from Page Turners Blog is here today to talk about the types of books that hook her. Does she judge a book by it's cover? What compels her to read a book? She's about to tell all!

Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
  • The cover - I know, I know, okay! But if it doesn't interest me I am not going to pick it up. Creepy covers, always hook me.
  • Strong female lead (which can usually be seen on the cover). But sometimes you get the girl in a dress so you have to read the synopsis and it will emphasize a kick ass heroine...more please!
  • Other bloggers raving about a book. Which isn't always a safe bet, but I can usually tell if I am going to like it, by which blogger is talking about it.
What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
Contemporaries that have a very tortured, soul wrenching story-line.  I like the cute romances, but the gritty ones like If I Stay are the ones I can't put down.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I have a love/hate relationship with romances - I like for the romance to be built on something other than "those sexy, intense gazes". I want the girl to be happy, when she is with the guy, not second guessing herself. So, I am usually a best friend type of gal, and then my guys always get screwed in the end.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
When I pick up a book, I want it to make me want to read it - so when I am dreading picking up a book or making myself read a few more pages...I know its time.

Literary Lures: Andye from Reading Teen

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Andye from Reading Teen is here today to talk about the types of books that hook he. What are the top three things that draw her in? What kind of romance does she love? Why does she put a book down? Today, Andye tells all.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
    • Positive Book Buzz.  I buy more books because of recommendations from other trusted bloggers than anything else.
    • I hate to admit it, but the cover.  Hello, my name is Andye, and I'm a cover judger.  If the cover grabs my attention, then it makes me want to find out more about the book.
    • Peer pressure.  I know this is kind of like the first thing I mentioned, but there is a difference.  One is overall buzz, and the other is specific pressure from trusted friends to read a certain book.  If someone loves a book, they're relentless!
What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
Honestly, right now, anything dystopian.  I've read tons and tons of these books, and I can think of ONE that I didn't care for.  I just love me some imaginative drama!

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
My favorite love stories are the kind that develop over the course of the entire book (series), and are loaded with tension.  Forbidden love, people!  It's torture, but I like it!

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
If I love a book, it's all I can think about.  I don't want to stop, and I don't want to do anything else until I've finished it.  So, if I find that I've gone days without reading a particular book, or I'm finding it hard to make myself sit down and read, I know there's something missing.  That's when I decide to say goodbye.

Literary Lures: Enna from Squeaky Books

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Enna from Squeaky Books is here today to tell you what draws her attention to books. She'll tell you her top three literary lures, what kind of romances she loves, and what types of stories always hook her into reading.

    Where you can find them...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
I'm not sure if I can put these in any order, but the three things that hook me are: The book's cover, the summary provided by the publisher (and along those same lines, the publisher themselves), and then the opinions of people I know who have read it.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
I used to be able to say dystopia. But now there are SO MANY dystopians that there are bad mixed in with the good. So I'll have to say that the stories that grab my attention are those that are not predictable (I don't want to be guessing the "twist" half-way through) and those that aren't completely dependent on whatever romance is in the book. I like books that have romance as spice, but not as the main course.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I'm well known at my blog as a "love skeptic." It's VERY hard for me to actually enjoy a love story. I hate any kind of insta-love or unexplained attraction. Therefore, the only love stories that I fall for are those that develop over time. I need the characters to get to know each other and I need to see why they are good together. You can't just say that they're a perfect match, you need to prove it to me. That way I become invested in their relationship and I can make my own opinions.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
My number one reason for releasing a book is profanity. If there's too much in the book I'll just drop it. But I'll also drop it if I'm bombarded with insta-love or an over abundance of description ("tortured blue eyes." "tantalizing brown hair." What does any of that even mean?!). And, on the rare occassion, I will drop a book just because I'm bored. Usually if I can tell that the book is taking so long to read that I could have read two or more other books, I will drop it.

Literary Lures: Sasha & Em from Sash & Em

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Sasha and Em from Sash & Em are here today to tell you what makes them pick up a book. They'll share their top three literary lures, what romances they love to love, and what types of stories always capture their attention.

    Where you can find them...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
Em: Gorgeous cover, non-contemporary, start of a series
Sash: Heartwrenching story, blurbs from authors I know, pretty covers!

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
Em: Dystopian, post-apocalyptic, paranormal/supernatural storylines are always fun!
Sash: Anything that looks like it's going to be character driven.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
Em: The guy is usually tall, dark, handsome, brooding, silent, sexy, bad boy type. It helps if he is ACTUALLY a good guy deep down and really loves her. I want to root for them when they are in the face of evil or are sticking it to a nefarious enemy by working as a team.
Sash: When they have the odds stacked against them. I love seeing couples go through hard times and come out on top!

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
Em:  Unless it has a profound effect on me...I let it fall to the wayside mentally and physically.
Sash: Whenever I feel like I'm ready to move on and not come back to that story, I know it's time. I don't let re-reads go though!

Books that hooked Sasha & Em:
    Em: Vampire Academy Series!
Sash: Anything by Melina Marchetta (Saving Francesca is my favorite.)

    Literary Lures: Donna from Bites

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Donna from Bites is here today to talk about why books get her attention. She'll confess what kind of romance sucks her in, what the most powerful literary lure are for her, and what type of character always pulls her into a story.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
A solid blurb really needs to pull me in and sound like something I haven't really read before.  In short it needs to stand out.  No standing out, no picking up.  If my trusted sources tell me it's something I need to read in order to keep the earth from getting thrown off it's axis I'l pick it up.  Or if it's by an author I already really like I'll be ready to grab it.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
A strong yet imperfect MC that goes through hell and back to accomplish some kind of feat in the end.  I like characters that don't have it easy, that need to earn every inch of their story and where the authors are ruthless in getting it done.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I generally avoid love stories for the most part.  But I have been suckered in by something resembling romance but it had a darker touch to it.  There was a deviousness that took away that sickly sweet factor that I tend to find with other romances.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
If I find myself no longer compelled to read on I'll get it go.  I need to want to keep reading something.  I need to have the book screaming at me to keep going.  Once that voice goes away, once it just becomes yet another book in the sea of many then it's time for me to move on.  There are far too many books out there for me to waste my time on something I'm not really loving.

Literary Lures: Emily from Emily's Reading Room

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Emily from Emily's Reading Room is here today to talk about why books get her attention. She'll tell you what hooks her, what makes her let a book go, and share some recommendations of books she loves!

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
The top three things that hook me into buying a book are a great cover, an author I know and love, and a killer synopsis. Covers aren't the end all be all for me, and I will definitely read a book with a lousy cover. But, a good cover will show what is beneath. I'd say that an author whose work I have enjoyed previously is most compelling since I already have a pretty good indication that I'm going to like their future work. And then, if all else fails, a really good synposis with a premise that interests me will get me hooked.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
The storyline that always turns my head involve a couple things. First, I really love fantasy, and historical fiction related to feudal periods. I also love books that involve some sort of impossible journey by a pair of unlikely characters. I also like books with girls that "do things." My final one is that I really do love any type of retelling of a beloved story.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I will always root for the best friend romance. Or the romance that involves great sacrifice and hardship. Because in my mind, those relationships are going to be the ones that last. And why would I invest in a relationship that hasn't truly been tested?

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put down a book and how do you know it’s time?
I will set down a book if I can't connect with a character. This happens on occasion when the stakes are very high, but I find myself not caring if the character makes it out or not. If a character either doesn't have a distinct voice, or makes choices that seem inconsistent with their situation, I'll definitely walk away.

    Books that have hooked Emily:
    • The Seven Realms Series by Cinda Williams Chima -- This series involves several epic journeys and a romance that is DEFINITELY worth fighting for. The final book in this series releases in October, so now is the perfect time to get into it if you haven't already. Oh, and they have AWESOME covers.
    • Cinder by Marissa Meyer -- A great example of a cover that hooked me. I really love that the element of the cyborg foot is included and how that ties into the Cinderella retelling. And, of course, there is the fairy tale retelling element
    • The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale -- Shannon Hale's an author that I always trust to tell a good story. Therefore, I pick up everything that she writes.
    • Shadows on the Moon by Zoe Marriott -- I hadn't ever read or heard of Marriott's previous works. And the cover wasn't particularly spectacular to me. But, the synopsis absolutely hooked me. I thought the concept of a Japanese Cinderella retelling was magnificent. And, I ended up getting pulled under by the BEAUTIFUL romance.

Literary Lures: Abigail from All Things Urban Fantasy

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Abigail from All Things Urban Fantasy is here today to talk about why books get her attention. She'll divulge she choses her next reads, what genre has he heart, and the reasons she'll walk away from a book.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
Well, the cover is the first thing to catch my eye (I'm a sucker for gorgeous cover art.  Dan Dos Santos and Tony Mauro are two of my favorite cover artists).  After that I go by recommendations. If a blogger I know, or an author I love raves about a title that pretty much guarantees I'll buy it.  And of course the description will grab me if it promises good worldbuilding and a strong protagonist. A few of the recent covers that have grabbed me are:  Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger,  WILLFUL IMPROPRIETY: 13 Tales of Society, Scandal and Romance, and Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
I buy anything fictional about Atlantis, but I also love stories about Greek Mythology.  I live for good paranormal books, but I'm loving the genre blending stories that are coming out  lately including paranormal steampunk like the Vampire Empire series by Clay and Susan Griffith and The Parasol Protectorate series by Gail Carriger.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I'm such a sucker for a good Alpha Male.  I also love heroines who get pulled into crazy worlds that they had no clue existed.  I'll fall for a good sacrificial act.  Some kind of selflessness on the part of the hero or heroine.  I'll root for an HEA in that case every time. Some of my favorite romances that I rooted for are Sam and Grace from the Shiver series, Chess and Terrible from the Downside Ghosts series, and Kate and Curran from the Kate Daniels series.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put down a book and how do you know it’s time?
I have a three chapter or 50 page rule.  I figure if a story hasn't grabbed me by then, odds are that it's not going to.  That being said, I hate not finishing a book, so it really has to be completely dull or off putting for me to let a book go.

Literary Lures: Katie from Sophistikatied Reviews

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Katie from Sophistikatied Reviews is here today to talk about why books get her attention. She'll divulge she choses her next reads, what genre has he heart, and the reasons she'll walk away from a book.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
The author - if it's by an author who wrote previous books that I absolutely loved, I'm definitely going to gravitate toward it (i.e. The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa). The cover - I hate it, but I am a person who judges a book by it's cover. And since I'm a designer myself, I'm very picky and finicky about it. But if it has a cover gorgeous, consider me sold (i.e. Ice by Sarah Beth Durst). Lastly, the inside flap synopsis. This is pretty much the biggest lure for me. If it's written so tantalizingly that I feel like I need to read it, I'm most likely going to buy (i.e. Graceling/Fire by Kristin Cashore).

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
Fantasy! Any good fantasy storyline will always have my full attention. It could be an epic, action-packed thriller or a soft, romantic character-driven novel - it doesn't matter. The magic and wonder and imagination that fantasy brings enthralls me so quickly (i.e. Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken).

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
Love stories where there are NO love triangles and the two characters haven't met each other previously. I love those the most because I feel like we get to experience the firsts of that relationship with the characters. And if both characters are likeable and have the right chemistry, that's what's gonna make me root for them.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
If I feel like reading the book is becoming an obligation or a chore, that's when I let it go. If I'm not at least a little bit invested in the story or the characters, it's not the right kind of book for me (i.e.The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern).

Literary Lures: Yara from Once Upon a Twilight

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Yara from Once Upon a Twilight is here today to share what about books lures her in. She'll tell how she picks new reads, why she'll part ways with a book, and what she can't get enough of right now.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
The main thing would be word of mouth, then the cover and finally the blurb.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
    Everything and anything dystopian lately.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I am a big sap, so I DO love the Happy Ever After, if its not I usually get turn off from the book. When a couple deserves to be in love, I hope all the best for them in the author's writing. I hope that they don't had ego suffer to much to get that H.E.A.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
I will put a book down just as quick as I began reading it, if the book is insulting people in real life sense. I think thats just not necessary especially when you are writing fiction. I also can't read some rape scenes, they leave me very troubled.

Literary Lures: Kat from Books & Sensibility

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Kat from Books & Sensibility is here today to share what grabs her attention when she's shopping for new reads. She'll tell you what grips her about specific storylines, shy she chooses books off the shelves, and how she knows when it's time to set a book down for good.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
The top three things that will hook me into buying a book are the cover, hype and the author. I think the cover thing is obvious-- even though it shouldn't, pretty covers always draw me in. I just I know they will look pretty on my shelf or when I'm carrying them around. As for the hype, if I hear a lot about a book, good or bad, I will most likely have to pick it up and make my own judgement. This was how I read Twilight and The Mortal Instruments. Lastly, if I know an author from either meeting them or following them on Twitter and  feel like I have a connection to them, I am more inclined to pick up the book. I want to support authors who I feel connected to.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
Any kind of twisted, speculative/ dystopian fiction storyline always draws my attention. I love the ones where society is essentially the same, except for one thing. I'm always intrigued by things like,  what is we lived in a world where love was a disease (Delirium by Lauren Oliver) ? What if abortion was outlawed, but you could become unwound (Unwind by Neal Shusterman) ? What if all the human life span was reducing to 25 (Wither by Lauren DeStefano) ? These scenarios grab me because I want to see how our characters thrive in this environment and more importantly how present day themes still exisit within the book's society.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
I like love stories that develop over the whole course of the novel and not just insta-love. I'm also finding that I'm a fan of the manic pixies in relationship, whether they are male or female when they are done well. Kind of like the love interests in John Green and Sarah Dessen novels. I think it's because they offer this unbelievably to the story, that makes it more fun.I root for the couples that have a relationship with high stakes. I also like the ones that had a past together and are rediscovering one another in the present. A little unresolved sexual tension doesn't hurt either. Some of my favorite YA couples are Ethan and Lena in Beautiful Creatures and Adam and Julliette in Shatter Me.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
When a book is in a series I am often time more likely to let it go for a while. No matter how much I enjoy a series, I always end up with series fatigue towards the end. Also, if a book sounds anything like Twilight I probably won't pick it up. There are just so many similar stories and they are all pretty similar.

Literary Lures: Amy from My Overstuffed Shelf

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Amy from My Overstuffed Bookshelf is here today to tell you what hooks her about books. She'll talk about why she buys books, what types of stories always make her want to take a read, and how she knows a book isn't for her.

    Where you can find her...

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
As much as I hate to judge a book by a cover, the very first thing is just that.  If your book has a cover that is amazing, I can guarantee that I will more than likely buy it.  Second thing is that summary on the back of your book better capture my interest with the short synopsis provided.  Third is I always read the first couple of pages in the book store before buying.  If your book can capture my interest within those few pages, I will buy it. There are so many books on the market today that I need that gratifying fix within the first chapter.

What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
This one is a hard one for me because I have such an eclectic taste with my reading interests.  I could be in the mood for suspense, young adult, erotica or even historicals.  The one main theme that usually runs in any of those is romance. Whether it be forbidden, angst filled or even down and dirty, you can bet I will read it if there is a romance involved.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
Hmm...I would say the ones with underdogs in them.  You know the ones I am talking about.  The ones where the hero/heroine is not popular, the outsider, the ones that aren't drop dead gorgeous -- anything in that spectrum. I always want to cheer for them because they are the ones that usually deserve the love the most!

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you let a book go and how do you know it’s time?
If a book hasn't captured me by the halfway mark and it is one I purchased myself -- not for review purposes only -- it gets passed on to someone else. I usually offer my books to another blogging buddy first, then it gets donated to my local library that is in desperate need of them.  If it is a review book that was sent to me, I always try to finish it. If it is completely hopeless though, I do inform the publisher or author and let them know the reasons behind the DNF. But this is that territory where some bloggers refuse to go down.  Even if it is a DNF, I will still post a review on what I DID read. I don't bash the book, but I do point out why it didn't work for me so other readers can have the opinion to weigh in on theirs.

    Literary Lures: Ginger from GReads!

Literary Lures is a new feature here at Wastepaper Prose that will run every Wednesday into the fall. Some awesome bloggers will be stopping by to tell you what hooks them on books and give some recommendations of books they love.

Ginger from GReads! is here today to tell you all about her literary lures. She'll tell you why she buys books, what types of stories she always falls for, and what will make her close the cover without looking back.
    Where you can find her...
    Twitter: @GReadsBooks

List the top three things that hook you into buying a book.
    • Romance. I need there to be some sort of romantic element in the story for me to be interested. I like kissing. In books. A lot :)
    • Cover. Yes, I admit it. I judge a book by it's cover. If I have never heard of the book, then it's the cover I see first. Depending on that, I may or may not look & see whats inside.
    • Recommendations. I trust certain people's opinions & when they tell me I need to read a book, well then I read the book!
What type of storyline never fails to grab your attention?
Two people, total opposites who meet and end up falling for one another. They can be from different worlds, or different social classes - whatever it may be, I am a sucker for opposites attracting. There is usually tons of conflict & passion! I love that.

What kind of love stories do you always fall for? What makes you want to root for those couples?
As I said above, I tend to fall for the opposites attract storyline. I like it when the couple you expect least to end up together, end up together. When it comes to contemporary novels, this is by far my favorite storyline. Life is messy and nothing is ever easy, so when a relationship is brought together when no one expected it to, I always end up rooting for them to come out alive.

Some books get released as quickly as you snatched them up. What makes you put a book down and how do you know it’s time?
This goes back to my answer for number one. If there is no mention of romance, 9 times out of 10 I will probably put it down. I'm a girl who likes passion and tension when it comes to matters of the heart :)

    Books that have hooked Ginger:
Obsidian (Lux series) by Jennifer L. Armentrout -- Sci-fi is usually not my first choice of reading, but I was told the romance in this series was intense & I found this to be very, very true!

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick -- This book is the epitome of two people, from different social classes, beating the odds and falling in love. Love this type of story!

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi -- Another book that was recommended to me because the romance was so intense!  I do like dystopians, but usually contemporaries are where I turn to first. I was swooning so hard after I read this book. So passionate!

Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols -- This book was my first encounter with author Jennifer Echols and it completely set the bar for every other YA romance after it.  Her writing is so beautiful, and so passionate.  These stories inspire me to want to write my own some day.
