The problem with being a book person...

...is, well, all the books.

They are a blessing and a curious. A joy and a pain. A magical escape and an unbearable burden. And I love them. All shapes and sizes. Every format and itteration. I adore the brand new, uncracked and smelling of freshly pressed paper. I cherish the used, well-loved and reeking of age.

But they are my downfall, my weakness, the focus of my shiny object complex... I see a cover, hear a recommendation, read an awesome review, or learn one of my favorite authors is coming out with a new book, and I get the itch. I want to buy a new book, even if I have an amazing to-be-read stack at home.

These new additions overrun my shelves, stack up on my desk and in corners, and generally invade whatever space is available. I actually told someone once that, if I had to, I would build them a bed out of books because the futon in my office was covered while I did a little reorganizing. Why was I reorganizing? To fit more books of course.

If you're anything like me, you stick to the party line when a knew one comes into the house. You'll just shift a few things, make a space on the shelf, and you'll read it soon. Scouts honor. Sound familiar?

I'm not ashamed of my love of all things literature, but I will admit I'm kind of a book floozy. I gravitate toward whatever will hold my attention, and that's true of shopping and reading. The impending avalanche of books that is my home office (those who know me can attest to this)  is actually what spurred me to participate in September is Read Your Own Books Month. The books I spend my hard earned money on deserve just as much attention as the ones sent to me for review, and this month I'm giving it to them.

So ladies and gents, fess up! Are you a book floozy?

Tell me what your TBR looks like these days. Is it a small pile, a shelf, or a whole room? Are books taking over your space? Do you have enough to build furniture out of? Would you if it weren't for your e-reader?  Inquiring minds want to know!

Getting your reading groove back...

Getting in a groove when you're reading can be tough. Life tends to encroach on reading time. There's work and family and errands and desperate attempts to maintain some semblance of a personal life.

This week weekend is really the first time I've had to sit down and get wrapped up in a good book. I've been going chapter by chapter whenever I can fit one in, so I was really looking forward to a three day weekend with no obligations. Alas, it was not to be. As I said before: Life intervenes.

A relative staying with my boyfriend and I moved out, friends we don't see often invited up to a birthday party, friends showed up from out of town and needed a place to stay, and the cherry atop the sundae was the brower-hijacking virus that cropped up on my computer last night. (That's why this post is so late you see. *sigh*)

So here it is,  one o'clock on Monday, five days into September is Read Your Own Books Month, and I only have one book read. Don't worry! I'm picking up speed, but it seems that the simple acting of existing lately has made me a magnet for drama, crisises, and various other demands on my time, all of which take away from reading, writing and blogging. The sad fact of the matter is that life has even managed to deprive me of my normal time-suck AKA Twitter.

But I am regaining control slowly. I have reclaimed my office, which was previously occupied by my relative in residence. That means I have a reading space with a closable door again. Ahhhh. My tiny literary oasis, how I'm missed you!

So, what do you do when life takes over and reading falls by the wayside? Do you fit it in doctors' waiting rooms and on lunch breaks like me or do you have a different strategy? Blog about it and link to the Inlinks (the blue button) below. I'd love to hear how you keep the day to day grind at bay and make time for reading.

What am I reading in September? Whatever I want!

September is here, and it's time to read your own books! Shove the review stack aside, and make room in your TBR for all the books you've bought over the years. I have an ambitious list, but I'm going to try to get to all of them.

It's a mix of things I own and ARCs I'm dying to read. You can see the full list below and the reasons I want to read them...

Highly Recommended
Take Me There by Carolee Dean
Andye at Reading Teen has been telling me about this book forever and it's about time I read it.

The Hourglass Door by Lisa Mangum
Meaghan at A Bookworm's Haven  adores this series and preaches it every chance she gets.

Once Every Never by Lesley Livingston
Cat from Beyond Elsewhere said this was a fun twist on a magical/paranormal story. I'm in!

Stupid Fast by Geoff Herbach
Kristi from The Story Siren heard Geoff read at BEA and said it was hillarious. Then I met him at ALA and he was hillarious.

Piqued My Interest
Crush Control by Jennifer Jabaley
Hypnotism and luuuurve. This has to be a cute story.

Dark Heart Forever by Lee Monroe
I'll admit to cover lust on this one. *hangs head in shame*

Ripple by Mandy Hubbard
This book stuck with me from the first time I heard about it, but no buzz ever materialized.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherine Valente
Awesome title and I've heard from several people that it is an equally awesome book.

Unwind by Neal Shusterman
Taking apart kids for parts in leiu of abortion. WHAT!?

Working Stiff by Rachel Caine
Reanimation and intrigue!

Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma
People have had such diverse opinions on this book, which deals with incest, that I have to find out what mine is.

Must Read ARCs
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Supposedly the ending is a huge OMG. And if that wasn't enough, I think Michelle might kill me if I don't read it soon.

Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst
Vampires and unicorns = PURE WIN

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Any book an author describes at Deadliest Catch meets My Little Pony needs to be in my TBR. Oh yes.

So tell me, who is participating in September is Read Your Own Books Month? What books are you planning to read? Leave it in the comments!
